The day arrived for us to move into our apartment. It was sad parting with the Ritz Carlton (sigh), but it was time to dive into real life here. Unfortunately the jet lag was really hurting and I had a headache most of the day.

When we got in we unloaded our bags and began trying to get things organized. Ahwa was golden. I could take a suitcase of clothes to a room and she would fold everything into the closet. It was perfect since I wasn't feeling 100%. For the most part the apartment was great. There are some things that will have to be worked on though:
- There is only one plug outlet in the master bathroom and it doesn't work.
- There is only one small closet in the master bedroom. I went ahead and moved my stuff in. Stan's clothes will live in a hall closet.
- The kitchen lighting and bathroom lighting is abysmal. During the day it's not bad because the apartment has a ton of natural light from outside, but at night it's hard to see myself in the mirror.
- There is a sewage smell that comes from the floor drains in the bathrooms that can be pretty strong. I applied a Pinterest tip to use vinegar and baking soda, which helped tremendously, but I think it will have to be a regular thing.
Now for my favorite things:
- Like I said above there are tons of window and lots of light.
- There is quite a bit of storage aside from the master bedroom closet situation.
- The apartment feels big.
- We have an oven, dishwasher (I'm not sure how it works, but Ahwa has used), and wine fridge (looks nice, but won't really get used as I don't drink alcohol), and a decent size fridge for Asia.
- The balconies line each side of the apartment with pretty incredible views since we are on the 27th floor. One side looks into the city, the other looks over Shenzhen Bay. The boys can sit on the balcony and watching tons of boats and ships. Don't worry - we had the building install wires on all the balconies so they can't climb over.
- The grounds are nice - a large pool we can use in the hot weather and a small playground for the boys all inside the gated community.
- We are right above some stores and restaurants that carry imported items.

The boys really enjoyed the playground and I know that will be a great place for them especially until we meet other kids for them to play with.
We did dinner that night at McCawley's Irish Pub downstairs. The fish and chips were excellent. They have theme nights there and it was Tex-Mex so Stan got tacos.
We turned in early. The boys went to bed in their room without too much trouble so that was good too.
I love reading about all your adventures so far! Sounds like you guys are off to a pretty wonderful start! :)
ReplyDeleteI had a friend who taught English in China for a year and had the same issue with the smell, but it also sometimes backed up through the drains. To keep the sewer gasses out, she bought a rubber disk the size of a piece of bologna (like what people use to open jars) and placed it over the Erin hen not in use. Worked really well.
